About the Position

The Village of Waunakee is pleased to present the new, key leadership position. Under the general supervision of the Village Administrator, the Deputy Administrator/Community Development Director oversees the planning, economic development, and community development functions of the Village. This position initiates, creates, and is accountable for the successful implementation and continuous improvements of plans, programs, and ordinances to facilitate and meet the objectives and mission of the community as established through the Village Board, Plan Commission, Community Development Authority and other committees and commissions of the Village.

This position will join a dedicated and talented team. They will supervise the Senior Planner/GIS Manager, and other staff as directed. This position serves as lead staff to the Plan Commission, Joint Plan Commission, Tourism Commission, Community Development Authority, and Sustainable Waunakee Ad-Hoc Committee. Participates in Village Board meetings as needed.

Succession Plan

The Village Board is dedicated to ensuring a seamless leadership transition when current Village Administrator Todd Schmidt retires in early 2027. This position was created specifically to provide meaningful opportunities for learning, mentorship, and collaboration. The selected individual will work closely with Administrator Schmidt, a talented management team, the Village Board, and key stakeholders to gain a deep understanding of the Village’s operations, priorities, and strategic vision. This forward-thinking approach to succession planning will continue Waunakee’s tradition of strong, effective leadership and commitment to community excellence.

They should demonstrate a proven ability to collaborate effectively with community stakeholders, drive strategic initiatives, and navigate the complexities of local government. The selected individual will possess the ambition and readiness to step into the role of Village Administrator, embracing the opportunity to lead Waunakee into its next chapter of growth and success.

Full Salary Range: $109,803-$140,566 (DOQ)
Preferred Hiring Range: $115,356-$127,337

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree strongly preferred) in public administration, planning or closely related field of study.

  • Five years of experience in municipal government, preferably with experience in community development economic development, and general government administration in a similar sized community. Minimum of three years of supervisory experience.
